But where does Mangosteen come from? No, it's not related to the mango, depsite obvious connections. The mangosteen is actually a tropical evergreen tree (here I thought evergreens were only in Canada), which apparently originated in Southeast Asia. This is believed to be the case because the Sunda and Moluccas Islands boast of tropical fruit with juicy flesh. The outer purple-black skinned shell of The mangosteen fruit is hard, with a purple (almost black) shell, or skin. The mangosteen fruit, also referred to as 'The Queen of fruits', is usually about 3 inches in diameter. The white, soft, juicy (though mildly acidic) flesh is in sections like an orange with 4 to 8 triangular pieces. |
